Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and safety of core needle biopsy used for neoplastic lesion in pediatric clinic.

Methods: Image-guided core needle biopsy were used in 95 cases under local or plus basal anesthesia. Anatomic sites were in different regions including head 5, neck 23, chest 10, oxter 6, abdomen 29, pelvis 3, limbs 4, inguen 3, testicle 4 and buttocks 8.

Results: Sufficient material for histologic and cytologic analysis was obtained and a correct diagnosis was made in 82.0% (78/95). Diagnosis was failure in 17.9% (17/95) due to that core needle biopsy just obtained insufficient material, necrosis material or normal tissue. Open biopsy and tumor resection following core needle biopsy were in 43 of these 95 patients. The corresponding figure was 83.7% (36/43). The complication encountered was transient hematuria in 3 cases with Wilms’ tumor.

Conclusion: Image-guided core needle biopsy is a useful and safety technique to diagnose neoplastic lesion of children. By which it can easy to get sufficient material for pathologic determination in most cases.
