The Association of CMV Infection with Blood Diseases

Objective: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is associated with lots of abnormal functions of systems and internal organs in the human body.  In order to get doctor’s attention to the etiology diagnosis on some blood diseases and active more thinking, this study analyzed the association of CMV infection with different blood diseases.

Methods: There are 18 CMV infection with anemia patient charts acquired using computer index system. The diagnosis of CMV infection was based on the standard from the Chinese Pediatric Academy in 1995.

Results: CMV infections were found in 3 patients with thalassemia, 4 patients with thrombocytopenia, 3 patients with iron deficiency, 1 patient with erythrocytosis and 11 patients with unknown-reason anemia. The unknown-reason anemia was characterized with pale or jaundice, heaptosplenomegaly, middle to severe anemia, increased reticulocytes, normal or increased white blood cells, deformed lymphocytes and abnormal liver function.

Conclusions: CMV infection can be associated with many known blood diseases and unknown-reason anemia. The relationship between them needs to be further investigated.
