STUDY ON THE PHARYNGEAL CARRIAGE OF HAEMOPHILUS
INFLUENZAE Zhang H-W, Ye L-Y, Chen X-M, Huang L-H, Lai G-X, Lin
M-Y. Department of Pediatrics, Fuzhou East Hospital, Fuzhou, China Objective: To investigate the characteristics
of the pharyngeal carriage of Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) in healthy
preschool children. Methods: Research subjects include two
representative kindergartens in Fuzhou. Obtained from pharynx in
healthy children by the method of oropharyngeal swab in the first month of
each season, samples totals 2053 specimens and were cultured on Improved
Columbia Chocolated Agar. Results: The average positive rate of Hi is
19.63% of the year. There is a statistically significant difference in the
detection rate and the biotype distribution of the isolated strains of Hi
in different seasons. The highest carriage rate happened in winter. There
is a higher drug-resistance rate to antibiotic in common use in the
isolated strains. Conclusions: The pharyngeal carriage of Hi is
closely related to different season patterns. The study reveals that
vaccine can be used to prevent this disease before winter of highest Hi
level. This
study provides an important piece of information for the treatment of
invasive disease of Hi.
