ASSESSMENT
AND TRAINING PROJECT IN PEDIATRIC NURSING FOR THE NURSES JUST GRADUATED Zheng XL, Li P Children¡¯s Hospital, Chongqing University of Medical Sciences,
Chongqing, 400014 China Objective:
In order to meet the special requirements of pediatric nursing, to
help the nurses just graduated from Nursing School (new nurses) pass
through the Transition of Reality Shock successfully, to make qualified
pediatric nurses, we have been practicing a systematic assessment and
training project for the new nurses. Methods:
27 new nurses enrolled into the project from July 1999 to July
2000. First we did an assessment for all new nurses enrolled in this study
for displaying what the new nurses need and made a training project. The
training courses were run in four phases and they were Introduction, Job
Orientation, Basic Knowledge and Techniques of Pediatric Nursing, and
Advanced Pediatric Nursing. After completing each training phase, every
trainee was evaluated. The nurses qualified for the evaluation would be
enrolled into the next step. Results: Among the 27
new nurses, 26 were qualified for 7 items of pediatric nursing assessment
(rate of eligibility was 96%) after taking training courses, but only 13
new nurses could pass through this assessment (rate of eligibility was 48%)
before taking training courses. Conclusion:
The knowledge and techniques in the curriculum of nursing school do
not completely meet the needs of pediatric clinical nursing work. As the
new comers work as pediatric nurses will face great challenges, a
systematic assessment and training project is very necessary for those who
want to be qualified pediatric nurses.
