Objective: The aim of this study was to know the status of infection of human herpes virus type-8 (HHV-8) in the mothers and their infants of Urumqi and Altai regions.

Methods: We use BCBL-1 cell line as antigen and collected 406 match sera samples of different nationalities (Uighur, Kazak and Han nationality) of mothers and their infants (cord blood) from Urumqi and Altai regions of xinjiang A.R, tested for determination of HHV-8 IgG and IgM antibody by immunofluorescence assay.

Results: Results show that HHV-8 IgG antibody positive rate of mothers and their infants of Uighur nationality was 22.9%(24/105), Han nationality was 5.4%(8/149) in Urumqi region and Kazak nationality was 26.1%(27/103), Han nationality was 8.1%(4/49) in Altai region. The IgM positive rate of mothers was 0.7%(3/406) and their infants was 0.5%(2/406).

Conclusions: This date illustrate that the infective rate of HHV-8 of mothers and their infants in different nationality was different. Uighur was higher than Han in Urumqi region and Kazak was higher than Han in Altai region too (p<0.05). The infants of HHV-8 IgG and IgM antibody positive need to follow-up.
