Objective: To investigate the factors correlated to prognosis and treatment of hemolytic uremic syndrome in children.

Methods: We collected the cases of hospitalized children with HUS during 1991-2000, analyzed and followed-up them and did statistical analysis with SPSS 10.0.

Results: The level of serum creatinine negativly correlate to the level of hemoglobin (r=-0.383P=0.037) and dialysis (r=-0.735, P=0.000), positively correlate to oliguria and duration of anuria (r=0.552,P=0.002); the equation of regression is: [creatinine] = 739.881-63.676×[hemoglobin] + 177.808 × [duration of anuria] (P=0.001); the level of hemoglobin positively correlate to the efficacy of methylprednisolone (r=0.424, P=0.019), relapse negativly correlate to methylprednisolone (r=-0.409, P=0.031); persistant proteinuria and relapse negativly correlate to anticoagulant (r=-0.640 ,0.636; P=0.000,0.000); persistant proteinuria is the key factor correlate to prognosis(P<0.01).

Conclusion: The degree of hemolysis, oliguria and the duration of anuria are important factors which affect the function of kidney; persistant proteinuria decides prognosis of children with HUS; using methylprednisolone can reduce hemolysis; anticoagulant can reduce relapse and proteinuria. Dialysis is an efficient therapy of HUS.
