KNOWLEDGE, PERCEPTION AND ATTITUDE STUDY OF NURSING STAFF FOR HIV / AIDS CASE IN PEDIATRIC WARD, Dr. SOETOMO HOSPITAL SURABAYA

Background: The case of HIV / AIDS in children still rare in Indonesia, but should be aware to the possibility of under reported and as is realized that the HIV / AIDS case in the world is like an ice mountain phenomena. In the otherhand the anticipate of nursing staff in Dr. Soetomo Hospital (especially in Pediatric ward) still insufficient related to minimize of knowledge and perception about HIV / AIDS. Because of that this research was done to get the goal of prevent the contamination of HIV / AIDS in Dr. Soetomo Hospital as a top referal hospital for East part of Indonesia.

Setting and sample: Pediatric ward Dr. Soetomo Hospital. 156 respondent enrolled in this research (90 nurses and 66 nursing staff), by random sampling.

Method: survey using total random

These data such as: perception, knowledge and anticipate activities to HIV / AIDS case were noticed.

Result: Seventy percent (70%) respondent have perception that the HIV /AIDS spreading by sexual intercourse and by cement / product of fluid body. Thirthy percent (30%) have perception that this disease spread by sexual intercourse only (exception using condom, according to them is quite safe). Forty five percent (45%) aware that HIV /AIDS can spread by the other way (although using candom, glove etc) and 25% respondent not aware about the dangerous of this disease.

Conclusion: Important to socialized the knowledge, perception and well attitude to nursing staff about HIV / AIDS case, because they are the first line in giving service for the patient.
