NURSERS’ EFFORT FOR REDUCTION OF NOSOCOMIAL INCIDENCE IN PEDIATRIC IMPATIENT CLINIC, Dr. SOETOMO HOSPITAL SURABAYA

Background: As is realized, in developing countries (including – Indonesia) has the possibility of hospitalized patient to get a nosocomial infection. Dr. Soetomo Hospital as a top referral hospital for east part of Indonesia has incidence 4% (1998) with the mortality 2,2%. It is important to prevent nosocomial infection by availability of facilities (isolation technique) and nursing staff should be care to personal hygiene.

Design: A cross sectional study

Setting & sample: Pediatric ward Dr. Soetomo Hospital. 86 respondent entrolled in this research (nurses that handling patient all day), by random sampling.

Method: Collecting data from questionnaire that fulfil by closed and open questions. Also nurses’ attitude to prevent nosocomial infection was notice. Observation including regularly hand-washing and completely of nursery facilities.

Result: Eighty six percent (86%) respondent have well attitude to prevent nosocomial infection (regularly hand-washing, and using the glove), but 14% contrary except if observed directly although they knew well how to prevent nosocomial infection.

Conclusion: It is important to improve the effort for prevent the nosocomial infection by regularly surveillance.
