ObjectiveTo probe the myocardial calcium metabolism during heart failure subsequent to acute pneumonia, we recorded the L-type Ca2+ current through the right ventricular myocyte membrane of pneumonic juvenile rat models.

Methods50-day old Wister rats were given via trachea staphylococci aureus administration or sterile normal saline administration as control. Right ventricular myocytes were enzymatically isolated and L-type Ca2+ currents were recorded with the whole -cell clamp technique.

ResultsThe results showed that the currents were not significantly changed 24 hours after staphylococci aureus administration but were significantly augmented 120 hours after. Peak potential and activation potential kept unchanged.

ConclusionIt was concluded that L-type Ca2+ currents of right ventricular myocytes were not changed during early stage of acute pneumonia but were augmented during later period. And pneumonia had little effect on peak potential and activation potential.
