Methods: Regular ophthalmic examination on 568 premature infants to detect ROP during 1996-2000 repeated check until 6 months after birth. For those baby with ROP, continued follow up to 5 years old.

Results: 46 premature infants were found with ROP, incidence was 8%. In 23(50%) cases, the ROP regressed spontaneously during stage 1-3. In 7(15%) cases, the ROP progressed to advanced stages and had to be performed laser-treatment or cryotherapy. 3(6.5%) cases developed blindness. The high risk factors were loe birth weight, low gestational age, artificial ventilation over 7 days and mothers with complication during pregnancy.

Conclusion: All premature infants and the newborns with high risk factors should be on regular ophthalmic examination, in order to detect ROP and give required treatment.
