Objective: To summarize and analyze newborn screening for phenylketonuria(PKU) and hypothyroidism (CH) during 97 to 99 in Jinan. Methods:  We use bacterial inhibition assay (BIA) for PKU screening, and enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for hypothyroidism (CH) screening. If the result is higher than the cutoff, we call back the child and do the diagnostic test. The child will get proper and continuous treatment once he has been diagnosed.

Results:  25 CH patients and 8 PKU patients have been diagnosed within this 3 years. The incidence for PKU is 1:10619, and for CH is 1:3395. Both the body and the mental development of the patients are pretty well after early diagnosed and proper treatment in time.

Conclusion:  Newborn-screening program can reduce mental disorder. We also want to share some experience in diagnosis and treatment of the two diseases.
