Objective: To compare clinic and bacteriological efficacy of 3 - day and 5-days Azithromycin treatment in children with recurrent tonsillitis.
Methods: Sixty children with recurrent tonsillitis (RT) were randomized to Azithromycin 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days or Azithromycin 5 days regimen: the first day 10 mg/kg, from 2 to 5 days- 5 mg/kg once daily. Clinical (including pharyngoscopy) and microbiological evaluations performed before and in the end of the treatment. Pathogens from surface of tonsils were studied according to NCCLS standards (for 1999 year).
Results: In both groups clinical results were the same (clinical improvement in 80%, assessment at day 10). The main pathogens were group A b-haemolytic streptococci (GABHS) - 44%, S.aureus - 24%, S.pneumoniae - 2%. Eradication of pathogens was achieved in 66%, decreasing of the level microflora concentration in 32%, no changes -
2 % from total number of patients.
Conclusion: Three days regimen of Azithromycin treatment demonstrated the same clinical efficacy as 5-days regimen of Azithromycin in the treatment of recurrent tonsillitis. We suggest that bacteriological efficacy Azithromycin therapy of RT in children will be more sufficient if daily dose will be increased.
