Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of Levamisole liniment (LMS -L) in children with asthma and important role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)and interleukin-2 (IL-2)in the pathogenesis of the diseases.

Methods: The 52 patients with asthma were divided into two groups (LMS-L group had 32 cases and control group had 20cases) randomly. Every child in both groups was inhaled routine treatment of ventolin inhaler and Beclomethasone Dipropionate 250 inhaler, The children of LMS-L group were additionally treat with LMS-L on surface of the skin, once every 5days for 3 months. TNF-αand IL-2 were examined in both groups before and after treatment by radioimmunoassay, pulmonary function were measured 4times before and after treatment. there was another normal group.

Results: During acute phase of children with asthma, The mean level of TNF-αwas much higher (0.75±0.31ng/ml) in chlidren with asthma than those in normal children (0.32±0.11ng/ml)(P<0.01), IL-2 was lower (1.62±0.50ng/ml) compared with those of the normal children (3.31±0.36ng/ml) (P<0.01). After treatment, The concentration of TNF-αwas no significant differences (P>0.05), IL-2 was distinct differences compared with normal group (P<0.01). Treatment with LMS-L produced significant improvement in pulmonary function in 3 months.

Conclusion: The therapeutic effect of LMS-L in children with asthma is safe and effecrive. It not only gain favourable adjust of immune function but also achive therapeutic object. TNF-αand IL-2 play a important role in children with asthma and help evaluating its severity and guiding the effects of treatment. No side-effect of drug was observed.
