diarrhea of unknown etiology, alone, can be considered suspicious of AIDS
in children. Methods: Thirty two children
were included in this study 21 patients with chronic diarrhea of unknown
etiology and 11 as a normal control group .All children were subjected to
full history taking, thorough clinical examination, complete blood picture,
urine and stool analysis, kidney and liver function tests and antibodies
detection by two different methods. Results: No HIV antibodies were
detected in all the studied groups and there were statistically significant
increases in leucocytic and platelet counts in chronic diarrhea patients
than in control group. Conclusion: This study does not
recommend screening of HIV antibodies in chronic diarrhea cases of unknown
etiology, only, but chronic diarrhea associated with other manifestation of
HIV infection.
