The study period was done from January 1, 1995 to August 31, 2000. Newborns were divided into 2 groups: those who developed and those who did not develop nosocomial infections. Based on the results, nosocomial infection was proven to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. The number of antibiotics used and duration of hospital stay are the risk factors found to be predictive of nosocomial infections. The predominant organisms isolated from all sites were mainly gram negative pathogens. Increased resistance of those organisms to aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, and extended spectrum penicillins was evident. The emergence of candidemia in the last two years of the study period was noted.
