Objective: To evaluate
the social-economic status of the epidemic bronchiolitis occurred in RUYANG
County, HENAN province from the middle of November, 1999 through the end of
Jannuary, 2000.
Methods: The
questioning shits designed by the Capital Institute of Pediatrics for the
children with the disease treated on the outpatient department or admitted
to the hospital of RUYANG County during the epidemic were collected by
mailing letter or in person, and then evaluated. Total 28 questions for the
parents to answer were focused on the economic status of the family, the
living conditions, the surrounding environment of the house, the hygienic
situation of the children and the education levels of the parents.
Results: Total 496
(496/553,89.7%) shits were analyzed. We found that the children accounted
for the major part of the hospitalized cases and all cases of the death
were in the families with low economic status (an annual income was less
than 1000 yuan 328/496, 66.1%), low education level (one or two illiterate
or poor-educated parents, 202/496, 40.7%) and low living conditions (a
small, dim, poor-ventilated house to live, 319/496, 64.3%). Conclusions: The social-economic status is
closely related to the severity of the epidemic bronchiolitis.
