Objective: This paper gives a discussion about the manifestations, differential diagnosis and treatment in staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS).

Methods: 9 patients were retrospectively analyzed and reviewed with literatures about the clinical presentations and treatment.

Results: Of 9 patients 7 were male and 2 female. The ages were from 6 months to 6 years old. The rashes were occurred on the face and around the mouth firstly, and spread to the neck, armpit and groin. The rash would affect all over the body surface soon. The skin presented the red patch with tenderness. After on the patch, epidermal necrolysis and bulla followed one by one. The color of rashes became weaker and weaker after using antibiotics. On the second or the third day, the scale appeared. The radial fawn fissures around mouth were found in all patients during initial stages. 5 cases appeared turgid eyelid; conjunctiva red with purulent secretion.4 cases had low fever. The local nursing was carried out to the skin and eyes.

Conclusion: SSSS is a kind of cutaneous disease mainly found in children (<5 years old) and caused by exfoliative toxin.The scarlet rash, serious epidermis damage in neck, armpit and groin, the radial fissures around mouth and tenderness are major characteristic symptoms of this disease. It can be distinguished with staphylococcal toxic epidermal necrolysis by clinical features. SSSS will heal rapidly through early antibiotic therapy and tender nursing on skin and eyes.
