Obiective: To measure
serum leptin in newborns at birth and correlate it with (birth wight,
length, head cicumferance and gestational age) and its relation to maternal
diabetes mellitus.
Methods: This study
was carried on 38 newborns: 18 infants of non diabetic mothers: 7(AGA),
11(LGA) and 20 infants of diabetic mothers : 11 (LGA), 9(SGA).all studied
groups subjected to history taking, through clinical examination,
anthropometric measurements (wt, L, HC).blood samples taken from umblical
cord at birth for estimation of serum leptin, cholestrol, triglycerides and
insulin.
Results: Showed that
leptin values correlate positevly with birth weight, length, head
circumferance and gestational age for newborns of both diabetic and non
diabetic mothers and no significant difference between serum leptin either
in newborns of both diabetic and non diabetic mothers (LGA). There is a
postive correlation between leptin & cholesterol, triglycrides and
insulin i.e: leptin increases with the increase in cholesterol,
triglycrides and insulin.
Conculsion: leptin
secretion probably occurs in utero, the strong postive correlation between
birth weight and leptin concentration at term regardless of the presence or
absence of diabetis suggests that adipose tissue mass is a majior
determinent of leptin secretion in utero.
