THE
INTRODUCTION OF IMPLEMENTING FAMILY-CENTERED CARE MODEL

Objective: Children are
precious in our society and it is important o fulfill
their needs during
hospitalization. To promote
the care philosophy of “Everything is
for Children”, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center implements
family-centered care model by using nursing process as core component to
serve children and their family. This paper presents the process of implementing a family-centered care model in pediatric health care facility.
Methods:
Family-centered care model is implemented by utilizing systematic holistic
care theory. Nursing process
is core component of practice.
Non-nursing directed activity is reduced to minimal. Nursing staffs use nursing process to assess family’s need and to plan related
nursing activity. Health
teaching need can be identified when consider family and disease
factors.
The quality of care is
evaluated based on nursing process.
Clinical ladder system is
established based on responsibility and specialty. From every
month care quality
evaluation, the nursing department is able to assess the utilization of
nursing process. The outcome
of care quality is measured by evaluating patient satisfaction level,
continuality of nursing documentation, and percentage of patient health
teaching.
Results: Since
implementing the family-centered care model, all nursing
staff
attended a systematic holistic nursing training courses. 85% of nurses
can
complete related nursing documentations. 99% of nurses are able to introduce themselves and 100%
of nurses are able to provide admission care within 5 minutes after
admission. All patients and
families received
admission
and discharging health teaching.
Admitted patients number increases 68.85% in year 2000 and patient’s
satisfaction level reaches 95.8%.
Conclusion: Implementing family-centered care
model allows nursing staff
to recognize needs and
objectives of patients and families.
From utilizing nursing process, nursing intervention is designed to
meet patients’ need.
Care is implemented to
patients and family. This care
model also enhances nurse’s professional attitude and promote patients’
satisfaction.
