TRANSLATION
FOR LINGUISTIC VALIDATION OF PEDIATRIC ASTHMA QUALITY OF LIFE QUESTIONNAIRE
INTO MANDARIN CHINESE

Objective: To translate original English Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life
questionnaire (PAQLQ) into Mandarin China.
Methods: Being agreed by author, Prof. Elizabeth Juniper, we cooperated
with MAPI research institute to access the following procedure: 1.
Recruiting 2 translators who are native speakers of Mandarin Chinese and
highly fluent in English. One is asthma specialist, another is linguist.
Each of them does a translation of the PAQLQ and then discussed and
established reconciled version. The "reconciled" version had to
be translated back into English by 2 professional translators, who are native
English speakers and fluent in Mandarin Chinese. 2. Prof. Juniper and MAPI
supervised every step, verified difference between original version and
back translation version, then a pre-final Chinese version be established.
3.Recruiting 10 asthmatic children age 7 to 14 in asthmatic clinic at
Chinese, asked them completed the questionnaire and see if they could
understand every item¡¯s meaning. The final Chinese version was established
after considered carefully their feedback.
Results:
PAQLQ¡¯s Chinese version was accepted by MAPI research institute and Prof.
Juniper.
Conclusion:
Pediatric asthma quality of life questionnaire (Chinese version) could
apply in Chinese asthma children.
