AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY ON SEVERE UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES OF CHILDREN IN HAIKOU CITY

Objective: To study the epidemiology of children severe injuries and deaths in Haikou city in Hainan province and to identify the risk factors for primary prevention.

Methods: A prospective survey was conducted on severe unintentional injuries of 2,0000 children aged 0-14 years old during Jan. 1, 1997 to Dec. 31, 1999 in Haikou city of Hainan province .The injury cases and deaths were identified using the ICD-10 coding classification system.

Results: The annual rate injury was 21/10000 children aged 0-14 years old and the death rate was 2/10000. Disability rate was 3/10000. Injury was the leading cause of death for children in this city. The major causes of children injury deaths was traffic accidents, falling, drowning .The major cause of severe unintentional injuries of children in Haikou city is falling, cutting injury, traffic accidents. The risks of severe unintentional injuries of children in Haikou city is lacking of traffic administer and safety awareness in children, lacking of safety administer in building engineering.

Conclusion: Unintentional injuries was a major health problem of children in Haikou city. The injury prevention for children should be developed.
