Objective: To investigate the risk factors of status epilepticus (SE) in
children.
Methods:
Case-control study conducted on 77 patients with SE and 154 controls with
epilepsy but non-SE. Conditional Logistic regression analysis was
undertaken. Twenty-four variables were analyzed.
Results:
Ten factors (including certain etiology, seizure as SE before, with retractable
seizure, the seizure type were complex partial or partial secondary to the
generalized seizure or atypical absence, abnormal neurological image,
abnormal background or focal spike in EEG, and non-compliance with
antiepileptic drugs were related to SE following single-factor analysis. By
the multiple factor analysis, the main risk factors were isolated certain
etiology (OR=5.62), seizure as SE before(OR=4.50), complex partial
(OR=2.96) or partial secondary to the generalized seizure (OR=2.40),
abnormal background in EEG (OR=2.06) and non-compliance with antiepileptic
drugs (OR=1.72).
Conclusion: SE is affected by the six factors, which are
indicators of a higher risk of SE in children.
