Objective: To investigate the intelligence level and structure, adaptive behavior and growth in children from iodine deficient area after prevention.
Methods: The intelligence function and adaptive behavior were measured in 106 school children 10-12 years from ChengDe City and 92 school children of the same age from iodine sufficient area with Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, revised (WISC-CR) and Adaptive Behavior Scale for Infant and Middle School student.
Result: There were no significant difference in Full-scale Intelligence Quotient (FIQ), Verbal Intelligence Quotient (VIQ), Performance Intelligence Quotient (PIQ), adaptive behavior and growth between two groups. But the scalescors of coding sub-test were significant lower then that in control group.
Conclusion: Intelligence level and structure, adaptive behavior and growth in school children from iodine deficient area after prevention have been reached the level of school children from iodine sufficient area. But there were some drawbacks in hand-eye coordination, attention and memory. The reason was perhaps related to the test environment and state of mind. Whether was it related to iodine deficiency need further investigation.
