Objective: In this study we evaluated the levels of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) nitric oxide (NO), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), tumornecrosisfactor (TNF), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and superoxid dismutas (SOD).
Methods: The NO, NOS, TNF, IL-8, SOD of 18 cases of viral meningitis (VM), 14 cases of tuberculous meningitis (TM), 16 cases of purulent meningitis (PM) and 20cases of control group (CG) were determined by colorimetric method and radioimmunoassay.
Result: 1) The levels of NO, NOS, TNF in serum and CSF with VM, TM and PM were significantly higher than those in CG (P<0.01). Moreover, the concentration of NO, NOS, TNF with PM were significantly higher than those with VM and TM (P<0.01). 2) The levels of IL-8 in serum and CSF with TM and PM were significantly higher than those in CG. While the concentration of IL-8 with PM was significantly higher than those with TM. There was no obvious difference between VM and CG. (P>0.01).3、The levels of SOD in serum and CSF with VM, TM, PM were significantly lower than those in CG。4、NOS,TNF,IL-8 correlated with NO in CSF with VM,TM and PM. And there was also positive correlation between TNF and IL-8.
Conclusion: 1) NO, NOS, SOD, TNF, IL-8 were all participated in the pathogenesis of central nervous system infection. 2) NO, TNF and IL-8 influenced each other and were participated in nervous tissue damage. 3) The NOS inhabitation can induce the damage of the brain tissue.4、The determination of NO,TNF and IL-8 of serum and CSF can be a discriminating index among VM,TM and PM.
