Objective: To study the relationship between gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and parasecretion of motilin (MTL)in newborn infants.
Methods: We measured plasma MTL concentration via radio-immunoassay (RIA) in newborn infants with GER, and compared with those of normal controls.
Results: 1. In newborn infants with GER, the level of plasma MTL increased in comparison with those of normal controls, (485±13 pg/ml vs. 396±7 pg/ml, P<0.01). 2. The increase of plasma MTL has no significant correlation with the severity of the GER in newborn infants. 3. The consumption for eating can effect the level of plasma MTL.
Conclusion: 1.The increase in concentration of plasma MTL correlates well with the GER in newborn infants. 2.The increase in concentration of MTL has important implication in the development of digestive function and the increase of the consumption for eating in newborn infants. 3. Detection of plasma MTL by RIA can be used to diagnose GER in newborn infants in early phase.
