Objective: To explore the effect and its mechanism of bacalin on interleukin-1βand tumor necrosis factorαin brain tissue of infectious brain edema.
Method: The infectious brain edema model induced by pertussis bacilli (PB) was used. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups:normal saline group (NS); PB group and baicalin group (BC). Brain water content (WC), content of Na+, the levels of IL-1βand TNFα, and the activity of nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) were determined.
Results: The results showed that the levels of WC, Na+, IL-1βand TNFαin group PB were higher than those in group NS, P<0.01. They decreased in group BC, P <0.05. The activity of NF-kB in Group PB was higher than that in group NS. But in group BC, it was similar to that in group NS.
Conclusions: The results suggest that baicalin could inhibit the production of TNFαand IL-1βin brain tissue of infectious brain edema model, and alleviate the degree of brain edema. Its mechanism maybe associated with the inhibition of activity of NF-kB.
