Objective: To compare routine (empiric) oral care,  leucovorin calcium solution plus routine oral care was for preventing oral mucosa injury during MTX treatment.

Methods: There were two groups; each group for 30 patients; and aged from 2¡ª14 years. Routine method was for Group 1,there were 13 males and 17 females. Chlorhexidine solution (1:2000) was available to wash and gargle mouth after getting up, meals and before sleep. Special method for Group 2, there were 14 males and 16 females; routine method plus 0.6% of  leucovorin calcium was used for washing and gargling mouth.

Results: Group 1, there were 4 oral mucosa injury patients (13%) in the 30 patients. Group 2, there was only one oral mucosa injury patient in the 30 patients. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P< 0.01).

Conclusion: When MTX was used to treat pediatric acute lymphocytic leukemia, oral mucosa injury occurred in the most patients. Our observation results showed that 0.6% of leucovorin calcium could prevent oral mucosa injury and had better effect than routine care method.
