Objective: To study the effect of inhaled fluticasone (IF) on the emergency observation for asthmatic children and estimate the medical care cost.
Methods: 80 cases with asthmatic children were analyzed before and after IF by emergency medical chart of computer management system. It was retrospective database, self-controlled study. The number of emergency visits (NEV), the observation time (OT) and the cost per visit and per medication were involved.
Results: the mean NEV of the 80 cases was 6.97±2.45 times per year before IF, it was dropped down to 3.52±1.68 per year after IF, P<0.01, the difference was very statistically significant. The mean OT before IF is 41.58 ±18.24 hours/year and it was cut down on 18.5 ±5.03 hours/year after IF, P<0.01. The mean cost is around 120 Yuan each emergency visit.
Conclusion: The rate of emergency visit and time of emergency observation for children in asthma can be lowered effectively with IF, the medical cost on acute asthmatic attack is reduced and the quality of the life in asthmatic children is improved.
