Objective: To explore the best therapy for cough variant asthma and to evaluate its curative effects by analyzing a five-year follow-up study in 60 children with such disease.
Methods: The sick children were randomly divided into two groups: Group A treated with glucocorticoid inhalants and Group B with immuno-regulatory agents. The curative effects, medical expenses and parents’loss of working time were observed.
Results: (1) The therapeutic effect in Group A was better than that in Group B.(U=5.1389, P<0.001). (2) Asthma occurrence was 26.7% (8/30) in Group A and 63.3% (19/30) in Group B (3) The PEFR in Group A was better than that in Group B. (4) There were statistically significant differences in medical expenses and parents’loss of working time before and after treatment in Group A (P<0.001) and no significant differences in Group B(P>0.05).
Conclusion: Early intervention treatment of cough variant asthma with glucocorticoid inhalants can protect the sick children’s pulmonary function, reduce medical expenses and parents’loss of working time and especially improve life quality.
