Objective: In order to assess the severity of tic symptoms quantitatvely in children, the authors introduced a Chinese translation of Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and applied it to clinical practice.
Methods: 72 cases of tic children were assessed prior and 2 weeks after treatment with YGTSS. The three-grade (distinctly effective, effective and ineffective) assessment was conducted simultaneously by the patients and their guardians on the efficacy of the treatment. The subjects were divided into 3 groups: (1) transient tic disorder (TTD) (2) chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (CTD) and (3) Tourette’s Syndrome (TS), the scores of different patient groups and of different efficacy grades were compared.
Results: The pre-treatment scores of 3 groups were distinctly different (F=59.31, p<0.01) while the percentage improvement of post-treatment YGTSS score was significantly consistant with patient/guardian assessment on the efficacy (F=124.44, p<0.01).
Conclusions: YGTSS scores are consistant with the severity of tic disorders in children. It is useful in the severity assessment of the disorder in a quantitative and more subjective way.
