PREVALENCE OF BRONCHIAL
ASTHMA, ALLERGIC RHINITIS AND ATOPIC DERMATITIS SYMPTOMS IN SCHOOL AGE
CHILDREN OF PUEBLA CITY, MEXICO

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and intensity of allergic symptoms,
in children from Puebla City, Mexico.
Materials
and Methods: Randomly selected among Puebla
City schools, two groups of students with 3000 individuals each were
chosen. In the first one, children of ages 6 and 7 (GI), the second group,
with teenagers of 13 and 14 years old (GII).A Spanish version validated for
ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) test was
applied to both groups.
Results: Chest wheezing ever,GI:13%,GII:21%;Chest wheezing in the last
year,3.3% and 51% ;Asthma diagnosis ,3.1% and 5.4%; Rhinorrhea without a
cold at least once in lifetime, 23% and 41%;Rhinorrhea without a cold in
the last year, 41% and 55%; Allergic Rhinitis diagnosis, 61% and 9%;
Conjunctivitis in the last year, 24% and 30%; Eczema symptoms in lifetime,
10% and 13%; Eczema symptoms in last year, 23% and 23%; Atopic dermatitis
diagnosis,3% and 9% respectively.
Conclusions: The prevalence of symptoms of allergy in Puebla city for school
age people is over the world average but below the industrialized
countries, reported prevalence.
