Objective: To explore the diagnostic value of the IgG antibody to purified protein derivative (Anti-PPDIgG) and the tuberculosis bacilli DNA (TB-DNA) in the children with tuberculous meningitis.

Methods: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample come from 27 children with tuberculous meningitis and 10 children with non-tuberculous meningitis. Anti-PPDIgG was detected by ELISA and TB-DNA detected by PCR. The CSF culture was conducted at the same time.

Results: The sensitivities of the Anti-PPDIgG, TB-DNA and culture positive were 76.2%, 77.8% and 11.1% respectively; the specificities were 80.0%, 100.0% and 100.0% respectively. The positive predictive value of the Anti-PPDIgG and TB-DNA were 88.9% and 100.0% and the negative predictive value were 61.2% and 62.5% respectively.

Conclusions: The TB-DNA by PCR and the Anti-PPDIgG by ELISA may be useful for the diagnosis of the children with tuberculous meningitis. The TB-DNA by PCR may be superior to the Anti-PPDIgG by ELISA.
