Objective: We wanted to assess the causes of acute testicular enlargement especially to distinguish testicular torsion from inflammation.
Methods: We checked up and summerized 49 children’s sonographic and power Doppler data of acute testicular enlargement.
Results: Hyperechogenicity and enlargement of the epididymis and testis were showed with US both in boys with testicular infection and torsion; blood flow could be picked up in theinner part of all infective testis with power Doppler and was increased compared with the healthy sides of the testis(blood flow in testicular inner part was undetectable in most prepubertal boys)whereas the torsional testis was enlarged and decreased blood flow.
Conclusion: acute testicular enlargement in children with increased blood flow indicated inflammation;acute testicular enlargement with decreased or non-increased blood flow should be suspect of testicular torsion.
