Objective: To understand the incidence and clinical feature of acute respiratory tract infection by respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) in winter and spring in Beijing between 5 years.
Methods: Specimens of nasopharyngeal secretions of 449 children, aged 32d–10y, suffering from acute lower respiratory tract infection, were obtained and RSV antigen of nasopharyngeal secretions and antibody titers were analyzed. Meanwhile, clinical features were recorded.
Results: The positive rate of RSV infection in acute respiratory tract infection was 21.2%~34% (mean 27.8%). Accordance rate of positive RSV antigen and serum antibody was 81.8%. 44.8% of cases were below 6 month old, 74.5% below 1 yr old and 4.8% were beyond 5 yr old. RSV mainly resulted in bronchiolitis in infants and the disease was severe in young infants. However, the older children who developed RSV infection only had mild respiratory symptoms. Eight cases developed otitis media.
Conclusion: RSV is the major pathgen in lower respiratory infection. The peak age is below 1 yr and the peak season of the disease is Nov. ~ Mar.
