Objective: To study the features of pathosis and ineffective haemopoiesis in children patients of myelodysplastic anemia (MDS).
Methods: Morphological examination of bone marrow of 16 MDS cases aged from 5 months to 14 years old received in our hospital from 1996 to 2000.
Result: We observed 16 children cases of MDS (12 cases of RA and 4 cases of RAEB) in 260 cases of anemia inpatients. Bone marrow aspirate smears of all cases showed hypercellularity or moderate hypercellularity. Megaloblastoid changes could be found in various stages of erythroid and myeloid lines. Nuclear anomaly and multinuclearity were common in erythroblast. Erythropoietic islands were found. The cases of RAEB showed abnomal localization of immature precursors (ALIP). Pathologic megakaryocyte series included micro-megakaryocytes and megakaryocytes with multiple round nuclei.
Conclution: Pathosis haemopoiesis is the main laboratory basis of diagnosis of MDS and the morphological features of bone marrow of child MDS cases are the same as those of adults.
