From January 1986 to October 1997, we performed one-stage "heart-shaped" anastomosis for Hirschsprung's Disease (HD) in 193 patients. Complete following-up was obtained in 152 patients (follow-up rate 79%). Mean age is 25 months (range from 9 days to 10 years) and mean follow-up time is 80 months (range from 24 months to 140 months). Early complications included urine retention in 2 who were recovered by retaining urethral catheter after the first postoperation week, enteritis in 10, anastomosis stricture in 1, intestinal obstructive in 2 who were cared with Chinese traditional therapy, Without infection of celiac, pelvic cavity or wound and anastomosis leakage or death occurred in all patients. Late complications were presented in 22 cases: adhesion intestinal obstructive in 2 who were cared with adhesion bowel resection, loner remain anal in 5 who were cared with a strip of internal sphincter cut, incision hernia in 2, enteritis in 6, occasionally stool stains in 7 and 6 of them related with improper diet. No recurrence of constipation and incontinence occurred in all patients. The therapeutic effect of this operation method is better significantly than the modified Duhamel procedure that we had performed.
