The pediatric professional because of their relationship with the infant and parents, is the person who will be called upon initially to diagnosis, treat and make recommendations on the care of newborn skin and related skin manifestations and conditions.
The newborn’s skin is physiologically unique in many ways. Characterized by a higher skin surface area-to-body ratio than adult skin, the infant has a high rate of transepidermal water loss. The thinner layer of skin of the newborn provides less barrier function leaving the infant vulnerable to the assault of a variety of infections and organisms. A variety of conditions, especially a hot and humid environment can disrupt the delicate balance of the newborn’s skin and provide the milieu for the development of infections.
The physiological differences between infant and adult skin necessitates that infant’s skin is treated with attention to its special needs. Recently, evidence-based guidelines have been developed in the United States for assessment and care of neonatal skin care. Pediatric professionals will be influential in communicating these recommendations to other healthcare professionals and parents.
