文本框: GUIDELINES ON NEONATAL SKIN CARE
MCLEOD RP
Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego, California, USA

This presentation will discuss the Neonatal Skin Care Evidenced-Based Clinical Practice Guideline developed by AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses). Discussion will include the research conducted to develop the guideline, how these guidelines may be implemented in the hospital setting, and what to teach parents about caring for their newborn’s skin.
The goals of neonatal skin care include reducing traumatic injury during caregiving practices, preventing skin dryness that can lead to skin cracking and breakdown, and avoiding exposure to topical agents that can be toxic when absorbed. Skin care practices that promote normal skin development in both the premature and term infant will be reviewed. Explanations will be given regarding the use of the Neonatal Skin Condition Scale. Principals for selecting products for use on newborn skin will be examined. These principals include the products potential toxicity, unnecessary chemicals including dyes and perfumes that may be ingredients, and finally the use of products that have been formulated and tested specifically in newborns.
The new guidelines for bathing, cord care, and circumcision care will be reviewed. Also, the use of adhesives, disinfectants, and emollients will be considered. Finally, special skin conditions of the newborn including the care of diaper dermatitis, and preventing transepidermal water loss in the premature infant will be covered.
