CURRENT STATUS OF LIVE RELATED LIVER TRANSPLANT IN
CHILDREN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO

Between January 1996 and March 2001, live related liver transplantation
(LRLT) has been performed 67 times in 65 children under 18 years old.
Indication for LRLT is biliary atresia in 59 (91%), Alagille Syndrome in 2
(3%), Wilson¡¯s Disease in 2 (3%) and liver cirrhosis associated with
hepatectomy for hepatoblastoma in 2 (3%). Donors are mother in 34 (51%), father
in 29 (43%), grandmother in 2 (3%), uncle and aunt each in 1 (1.5%). Hepatic
artery thrombosis has been associated in 9 (13%), bowel perforation in 8 (12%)
and bile leakage in 10 (15%). Acute rejection has been found in 35%. Six
children died and 59 (90%) are surviving and enjoying normal daily life. Major
post-operative complication has not been observed in donors and all of donors
are surviving and doing well.
