Text Box: RESEARCH OF HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAM AS AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF PREVENTION OF CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING

Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the role of health promotion program in prevention of childhood lead poisoning.
Method: 209 children at the age of 1~6 years from Yancheng, Jiangsu Province and from Xuhui district in Shanghai whose blood lead level were higher than 100mg/L were chosen to be studied. The subjects were divided randomly into two groups, one being the health promotion group and the other the control group. There were 113 and 96 subjects in each group. The parents were instructed to fill out a questionnaire concerning the family general information, family and social environment, etc. Health promotion program were conducted in parents who received lectures, slides and videotape presentations, and teaching materials to understand background knowledge of childhood lead poisoning. The program was carried out once every two weeks during the first month and three month later the blood lead levels of all selected subjects were measured again, and the questionnaire were filled out again by parents.
Results: The blood lead levels of both groups had a decrease accordingly, which was more significant in health promotion group compared to that of the control group. The blood lead levels of both groups had no significant differences statistically before the program, and became statistically different after the program.
Conclusion: It is concluded that the health promotion program may be one of the most effective, cheap, and practical means of prevention of childhood lead poisoning.
