EVALUATION OF BABY-FRIENDLY HOSPITAL INITIATIVE TRAINING PROGRAM

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Training Program (BFHI) is a training program for the promotion and management of breastfeeding for the maternity staff.
Objective: The purpose of the evaluation study was to assess the effectiveness of the BFHI training program.
Method: This was based on responses to a self-administered questionnaire to the trainee. There were questions on objectives, contents, practical aspects and teaching format, ranking of teaching methods, strengths and weaknesses of the training program.
Result: This training was evaluated in Dhaka Medical college hospital, Sir Salimullah Medical college hospital, Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research and Shefa Nursing Home. Seventy-nine participants responded. Out of them 39 were doctors and 40 were nurses. The objectives were accepted by most of the respondents. The comments on the theoretical contents, practical aspects and teaching format were satisfactory. The respondents ranked the practical exercise as number one and lecture as least preferred teaching method. As a strength of the training program, the opportunity for active participation was on the top of the list and as weakness 'most lecture based lesson was the most frequently stated weakness.
Conclusion: Recommendation can be done to change the BFHI training program as found in the study to improve its quality.
