Objective: To show significative differences of BMC and BMD between preterm and term neonates during these seven years.

Methods: We study a group of 46 neonates followed during seven years. 26 of then were preterm and 16 were term newborns. We measured BMC and BMD using Hologic QDR-1000 TM (double X-ray densitometry), at birth, 4 months, 1 and 7 years in each child. We also take note of weight, high and craneal perimeter. These notes were compared using Man-Whitney Test.

Results: 1 BMC

3 There are significative differences in BMC between preterm and term children at birth (p<0,0001) and 4 months old (p<0,001) but not at 1 and 7 years old.

4 There are significative differences in BMD between preterm and term children at birth (p<0,001) and 4 months old (p<0,025) but not at 1 and 7 years old.

5 Longitudinally there isn´t significative difference of BMC from birth to 4 months in both groups. There is it from birth to 1 year old.

6 Longitudinally there isn´t significative difference of BMD from birth to 4 months in preterm group. But in term group BMD is significativelly lower (p<0,02) at 4 months compared to bith.

7 While in term group there isn´t significative difference in BMD from birth to 1 year old, there is an important growth of BMD in preterm group during this period (p<0,001).

Conclusions:

1 At 1 year old preterm group reachs term group BMC and BMD.

2 From birth to 4 months old the preterm group has a lower BMC and BMD than the term group.

3 In term group there is a fall of  BMD and BMC from birth to 4 months which is recuperated at 1 year old.

4 At 7 years old there are no differences between both groups.
