THE PROBLEM OF NICOTINE SMOKING IN BYDGOSZCZ SCHOOL PUPILS

Objective: The study has been conducted on 681 persons,the pupils both of primary and high school in Bydgoszcz /chosen at random/.214 of them were from the 7-th and 8-th grades of primary school and 467 from the 2-nd,3-rd and 4-th grades of high school.Among the subjects there were 307 girls and 374 boys.

Methods: Tthe study has been done on the basis of a questionnaire¡±Health Behavior Questionnaire¡±-Institute of Behavior Science Univ.of Colorado 1989.The number of students smoking,the age at which they start and frequency of smoking,the influence of smoking parents on their children,the youngsters attitude towards the above addiction,the youngsters awareness about the negativ econsequences of smoking as well as the meaning of religion for using nicotine have been estimated.

Results: 32% of pupils from Bydgoszcz primary schools claim that they tried to smoke.The youngsters from high schools smoke cigarettes twice as often.The initiation age at which theystart to smoke cigarettes is very young /12 years and 9 month/ similarly as which they start smoking regularly /15 years/.The average age of the first attempt to smoke,of smoking regularly,dose not depend on the kind of high school,but still the frequency of smoking appears to be highest in vocational and technical schools.Smoking is a popular and socially accepted mode of behavior among the youngsters.At their homes either mother or father but basicly both parents smoke cigarettes.

Conclusion: Smoking is remarkably less popular among the declared religions people.The majority of inquired students are aware of all negative effects of smoking which does not,as it shown,reduce their use of them
