PRIMARY TUMORS OF KIDNEY IN CHILDREN

Primary tumors of kidney occupy the sixth place among childhood neoplasms. This study documents the clinical and pathological aspects of primary renal tumors of children under 16 years of age, retrieved from the files of Pediatric Pathology Unit, Department of Pediatrics, Hacettepe University School of Medicine in a period of 23 years. Out of total 361 cases, Wilms tumor (WT) constituted the majority with 298 cases. In WT, female/male ratio was 0.93 and mixed pattern was the most common (59.8%), followed by blastemal (27.2%), stromal (7%) and epithelial (6%) subtypes. Teratoid features were seen in one case and anaplasia in 10 cases (3.3%). Clear cell sarcoma of kidney was the second in frequency (6.9%) and most of these patients were younger than 5 years of age. The next most common tumors were mesoblastic nephroma (2.2%) and malignant rhabdoid tumor of kidney (1.6%). Pathologic diagnosis of the others in decreasing frequency were cystic nephroma, renal cell carcinoma, cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cystic nephroblastoma, malignant mesenchymal tumor and metanephric stromal tumor of kidney.
