Objective: To study the feasibility of preoperative Transcatheter Arterial Chemo-embolization (TACE) for Wilms’ tumor.

Methods: Transcatheter arterial chemo-embolization (TACE) were preoperative performed in 15 cases of huge and advanced Wilms’ tumor. The embolus contained adriamycin, iodized oil and gelatin sponge. Tumor resected 2 weeks after TACE.

Results: After TACE the patients had fever and transitory hypertension, but no depressed marrow, no hepatic, renal and cardiac inadequacy. Mean regression of tumor size war 35.6%. “Downstaging” and complete necrosis of tumor were found in some cases. The rate of tumor radical extirpation was 66.7%. Two years survival rate was 75%.

Conclusion: TACE could be used as preoperative therapy for advanced Wilms’ tumor. The advanteges are lower dosage of antineoplastic drug, milder side effects and more necrosis of tumor; the period of preoperative therapy reduced to 2 weeks. Higher radical tumor resection rate and higher survival rate of patients.

Key words: Wilms’ tumor, transcatheter arterial chemo-embolization (TACE)
