Objective: To assess the diagnosis and results of treatment for tumours diagnosed in the perinatal period in our institution.
Methods: The medical records of the patients diagnosed to have tumours at perinatal periods were reviewed.
Results: From 1992 to 2001, 7 patients were diagnosed to have tumours at perinatal period; antenatal (n=6) and postnatal (n=1); namely, mesoblastic nephroma (MN) (n=2), neuroblastoma (NB) (n=2), sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) (n=2) and intracranial immature germ cell tumour (GCT) (n=1). The antenatally diagnosed tumours were referred to our institution for treatment after birth. The patient with intracranial GCT was an unbooked case without antenatal diagnosis. Labour started soon after admission at gestation of 27 week. Brain ruptured during vaginal delivery and she died after birth. The MN babies were diagnosed at the third trimester and born at full term. One infiltrative tumour was found at the first operation. Nephrectomy was performed after chemotherapy. The second tumour was removed soon after birth. Both patients had mean survival of 4.5 years (range: 3m to 9 years). One NB was removed soon after birth and the other was resected after chemotherapy. Both patients had mean survival of 9.5 months (range: 6m to 13m) without residual disease. One SCT was diagnosed antenatally at 19 week of gestation. He developed hydropic features and died of cardiac failure. The other patient was born with birth weight of 680 gm and tumour weighed 208 gm resected soon after birth. She survived 6 years without evidence of disease.
Conclusions: Common perinatal tumours are MN, NB, SCT and intracranial GCT. Antenatal ultrasound allows prompt diagnosis and early referral for treatment.
