A STUDY ON INTERVENING MEASURES OF ACCIDENTAL
SUFFOCATION AND DROWNING TO CHILDREN AGED 0-4 IN COUNTRYSIDE IN JIANGSU

Objective: In search of the intervening measures to decrease the
children’s deaths due to accidental suffocation and drowning in
countryside.
Methods: We survey the children aged 0-4 died from accidental suffocation
and drowning in 6 counties in 1998-1999.
Results: The main cause of accidental suffocation was quilt
suffocation. The main risk factors were infants tied in a candle with
blanket, except for infants sleeping with their parents in the same beds.
The main cause of drowning was falling into the river while the walking
baby of one more year playing around the river. The children suffering from
accidental suffocation and drowning didn't get first aid in spot.
Conclusions: Strengthening parents' opinions of keeping away
unintentional injury, changing the poor behavior and environment and
learning emergency treatment were important measures on intervening and
controlling the occurrence and death of accidental suffocation and
drowning.
