Objective: To evaluate the result of
transcatheter closure of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with coils.
Methods: Coil occlusion of PDA through
transarterial approach was attempted in 64 consecutive patients (male 16,
female 48; age: mean 6.6 years, range 7 months to 48 years; body weight:
mean 18.6 kg, range 5.3 to 58.5 kg ). The ductal diameter ranged from 0.1
mm to 4.9 mm with mean of 2 mm. The systemic to pulmonary flow ratio ranged
from 1.01 to 4.9, with mean of 1.41. The results were evaluated by
angiography at 10 minutes and by color Doppler echocardiography at 1 day, 1
week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after the procedure.
Results: The total occlusion rates
were 78.1%, 87.5%, 90.6%, 93.8%, 95.3%, 95.3% and 95.3% at 10 minutes, 1
day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months respectively.
Conclusions:
Transcatheter closure of PDA with coils is a safe and effective method.
