Objective: A weekly intra-curricula sport has been
conducted since the first year of elementary school. Every school could
determine the type of sport to be conducted. A first six-year effect of
intra-curricula sport is interesting to be assessed, because there has
never been studied yet the type and efficacy of appropriate sport dealing
with improving physical fitness in children.
Methods: All studied subjects consisting 11-12-year-old
children were 49 preadolescent boys and 42 girls. Height and weight were
measured twice to determine body mass index (BMI). The average of two
measurements of height and weight was calculated. Physical fitness was
determined by conducting Harvard-step test for 3 minutes with the speed of
120 times/minute.
Results: A three minutes Harvard-step test could be
achieved in 83.33%, 78.57%, 14.29% and 6.67% respectively of thin, normal,
overweight and obese boys. While in young girls, three-minute achievement
was 43.75%, 15% and 0% respectively in thin, normal and overweight. It was
also found that the higher BMI was, the poorer physical-exercise
achievement was
Conclusion: The effect of existing intra-curricula sport in
elementary school to physical fitness was poor among preadolescent boys as
well as girls particularly among overweight and high BMI subjects. So that
it is necessary to rearrange and determine the type of intra-curricula
sport in elementary school.
