Purpose: The aim of this study was use of vector volume manometry to assess the anal sphincter function after surgical correction of anorectal malformation.
Methods:The anal manometric vector volume for 40 cases with surgical anorectal malformation and 31 normal children were assessed by using three-dimensional PC Polygram HR system with an eight-channel catheter. Results:The patients were subdivided into good group, fair group and poor group according to the clinical anal function scoring system. Maximal pressure and vector volume in each group of patients were significantly lower than those in normal children respectively(P<0.01). The maximal pressure 、 vector volume and vector symmetry index in poor group were significantly lower than those in fair group and good group respectively. (P<0.01).
Conclusion:The pressure and vector volume were deficient in patients with surgical anorectal malformation. The patients who had poor anal function had lower anal pressure. The distribution of anal pressure in the patients with poor anal function is asymmetry. The vector volume manometry can be an objective and comprehensive tool for the evaluation of anal sphincter function in the patients with surgical anorectal malformation.
